Wine has an immediate relaxing effect on us. A photo project by Marco Alberti called the “3 Glasses Project” clearly shows how wine is helpful in beating stress and fatigue after a hard day’s work. You can read more about the project here. The following photo is just an example of how the personality of a person transforms after having 1, 2 and 3 glasses of wine.
It is obvious that wine relaxes and loosens us up. It helps us let go of the inhibitions. You might wonder why this happens? Why does wine have such a relaxing effect on us?
Well, the answer is that wine is a depressant of the central nervous system. In simple words, wine, or any other alcohol for that matter, sedates us. As a result, we let go of our worries and inhibitions.
So, you might ask, “Is it bad?”
Well, it depends on the amount of wine you consume. In moderation, wine is not only harmless but also has a plethora of health benefits. Here are some of the many benefits of wine:
Wine is greatly helpful in preserving your memory. Researchers have conducted numerous scientific experiments to understand the effect of wine on memory. In one such test, women in their 70s were given memory quizzes and those that drank on one or more glasses of wine fared much better than those that did not. This is because of wine’s ability to prevent cognitive decline by preventing clots and reducing blood vessel inflammation. The level of HDL, commonly referred to as the good cholesterol, in our blood increases with consumption of wine and is responsible for unclogging of arteries.
Wine is great for your heart. Moderate consumption improves blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart failure. The main reason for this is the presence of antioxidants called flavanoids in the wine. They are mainly present in the skin of the grapes wine is made of. Hence, a glass of red wine, and even white wine, are great for your heart.
A British study showed that people who consume wine daily had 11% lesser chance of being infected by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which is one of the main causes of stomach cancers, ulcers, and gastritis. On the other hand, a Spanish study has shown that even consuming half a glass of wine can protect you against food poisoning caused due to exposure to contaminated food.
Protection against Ovarian Cancer
The anticancer properties of phytoestrogens or antioxidants present in wine fight and prevent ovarian cancer. This claim is supported by a study conducted by Australian researchers wherein women who consumed wine daily were at a 50% lesser risk of the disease. Another recent study in the University of Michigan came out astonishing results wherein ovarian cancer cells in a test tube were killed with the help of a red wine compound.
Loose Those Extra Pounds
Numerous studies have found that people who consume wine moderately on a daily basis have lower body mass than those that drink wine occasionally. Also, when compared to those who consumer liquor, wine drinkers have lesser abdominal fat and narrower waists. The reason for this is that wine results in burning of extra calories up to 90 minutes after you have consumed it.
Reduces the Risk of High Blood-Sugar Level
While the exact reason is not known, wine drinkers, mainly premenopausal women, who consume a glass or two daily run 40% lesser risk of developing type 2 diabetes when compared to those who do not. Wine, in diabetic patients, reduces insulin resistance.
Estrogen is known to slow down our body’s mechanism of destruction of old bones more than it slowing the production of new ones. Wine boosts the level of estrogen in our bodies resulting in higher bone mass.
