With Donald Trump sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, his wife Melania Trump became the new First Lady. While the world has learnt a lot about Donald Trump in the last couple of years, there is very little that we know about the first lady Melania Trump. The gorgeous former model has maintained a low profile in spite of being in the limelight. She has spoken very little in public except for a speech at the Republican National Convention, which turned out to be disastrous as it was said to be plagiarized off of the then first lady Michelle Obama. So, we tried to find out more about her and here are 10 facts that you might not know about her:
The First Lady was born Melanija Knavs in Yugoslavia on April 26, 1970. She is 24 years younger to her husband Donald Trump. In fact, she is only six years older than her stepson Donald Trump Jr. She is only the second First Lady to be not born in the United States and she is the first in 200 years. Louisa Adams, wife of the John Quincy, the 6th President of United States, was the first first lady to be born outside of the United States. Louisa Adams grew up in England. Melania grew up in Slovenia and did not speak English while growing, which is also a first.
Said “No” To Donald Trump at First
Melania met Donald Trump in 1998, when she was 28 years old, at a Manhattan party. Donald Trump had come to the party with another woman, but was taken aback by Melania’s beauty. He immediately asked her for her number, but she refused. It is understandable as Donald Trump, at the time, had the image of a notorious playboy. Instead of giving him her number, she asked him for his number.
Later when she spoke about their first meeting, she said, “If I give him my number, I’m just one of the women he calls. I wanted to see what his intention is. It tells you a lot from the man what kind of number he gives you.”
Donald Trump actually gave her all of his numbers, and she waited for a week before she called him. She was initially not sure about their relationship as she had doubts about his commitment. So she broke it off after a while but they were back together six months later and this time they were exclusive to each other.
Proficient in Five Languages
Brought up in Slovenia, Melania is fluent in her native Slovene. She can also speak Serbian, which is closely related to Slovene. Being a very small country, Slovenia encourages its students to learn multiple languages to increase their opportunities in career and life in general. English, French, and German are the three foreign languages that students are encouraged to learn, and Melania learnt all three.
Born In a Communist Country – Another First
Melania grew up in the then communist Yugoslavia under Marshal Josip Tito’s rule. In fact, she is the first first lady to be born in a communist country. Growing up in a repressive communist regime, Melania dreamed of going to America and seeking a free life. Western influences were banned under the communist rule, but Melania’s mother smuggled fashion magazines for her to look at. Slovenia became independent in the year 1992, and in the same year Melania kick started her career in fashion by winning a modeling contest.
