Meryl Streep won the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes on January 8th. One of the greatest actresses of her time, Meryl has the highest number of Academy Award nominations for any actor or actress. Here are 10 things you did not know about Meryl Streep:

1. Meryl was turned down for a role in the movie King Kong

Dino De Laurentiis Sr. auditioned Meryl for the role of the girl in the 1976 hit movie King Kong. She was invited by De Laurentiis Sr.’s son who had seen Meryl in a play. On seeing Meryl, De Laurentiis Sr. told his son in Italian, “Why did you bring me this ugly thing?” What he did not know was Meryl spoke Italian. She left the audition apologizing to De Laurentiis Sr. for not being beautiful enough. As they say, “Rest is history.”

2. Meryl’s birth name is Mary Louis

Meryl’s birth name is Mary Louis and she preferred Debby, Kathy or Patty, but her father kept calling her Meryl and it remained. Most women in her family including, her mother and grandmother were named Mary. So, continuing the tradition Meryl also named her first daughter Mary.

3. She confesses The French Lieutenant’s Woman was her worst performance

She believes and has admitted that she was very young at the time and did not play the role as well as she could have. She says she did not feel that she lived the role.

4. Clooney pranked Meryl

George Clooney is known to be a serial prankster. Many Hollywood stars have fallen prey to his pranks, including Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. Meryl Streep was at the receiving ends of one his pranks. Clooney made fake letterheads under Brad Pitt’s name and sent a letter to Meryl. Neither Meryl Streep nor Brad Pitt knew about it. The letter consisted of information on dialogue coaches intended to help Meryl study for her role as the Iron Lady. She has said she found the prank hysterical.

5. Not a Big Fan English Breakfast

In 1971, Meryl was a big backpacker and stayed a lot in Bethnel Green, the inexpensive bed and breakfast. It helped as she did not have much money but more importantly it had a huge complimentary breakfast. She ate everything she could as otherwise she would be starving. Never before had she had an English breakfast and the moment she found out that she had a blood pudding, she went to the loo and threw up her entire breakfast.
